Fleas and ticks will be here soon!
The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, it’s springtime once again. The ticks will be hatching soon and looking to feed on you or your pets, and fleas will be thirsty for a meal, too. Flea and tick control is important for many reasons. Fleas can cause anemia in your pet, and can transmit tapeworms and other diseases. Ticks in our area can transmit diseases to pets such as Tick Paralysis,Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia among others. Both fleas and ticks have the potential to transmit rare diseases to humans if handled too! Transmission of diseases to your pet requires 24-48 hours of tick attachment and feeding. There are many insecticides and pharmaceuticals available to kill fleas and ticks quickly when they are on your pet. The following are the products we carry at our clinic:
Frontline Gold is the latest innovation in flea and tick protection from the maker of Frontline Plus. It contains three ingredients which kill both adult fleas (within 30 minutes!) and ticks, and the next generation of flea eggs and larvae before they can develop into adult fleas. Regular monthly use of Frontline Gold also helps prevent new flea infestations. This topical product is safe for use in dogs over 5 pounds and cats over 3 pounds, both over the age of 8 weeks. We offer a free dose with every 3 pack box purchased.
Revolution is a monthly topical prescription product that kills ticks, fleas, internal parasites and ear mites in dogs and cats and sarcoptic mange mites in dogs. If you need Revolution for your dog’s parasite control, we recommend and supply a free tick collar for use when in areas of heavy tick infestation. We also recommend Revolution for heartworm prevention prior to, during, and after traveling with your dog or cat to a heartworm prevalent area. Revolution is safe for use in dogs over 6 weeks old and cats over 8 weeks old of any size.
Bravecto chew gives dogs 12 weeks of flea and tick protection with a single treatment. This makes it easy for you to provide long-lasting coverage to your dog, without having to worry about remembering frequent treatments. It is approved for use in dogs 6 months and older, weighing over 4.4 pounds.
It’s important to remember that even when using these products you may still see ticks on your pet. Some of the products take 12-18 hours to kill the tick once it’s exposed to the product. And you may also see more fleas if your pet has flea infestation, as the fleas become more active before the product kills them.
